How to Play or Save Audio Files
Our audio files are formatted for streaming using
your computer's default MP3 player. Some common MP3 players are
Windows
Media Player, iTunes,
Quicktime
and Real Player. If you do not
have one of these players, click on the above links to be directed
to their websites. Each offers a free download.
What is the difference between "streaming" and "downloading"?
Streaming audio will download enough audio to your
temporary Internet cache so you can begin listening to the file
while the remainder is loaded to your cache. (Click the "speaker"
icon to begin the audio stream).
The advantage is that the audio file will begin playing automatically
and you do not have to download the file to your hard drive.
The disadvantages are that, if Internet traffic is extremely
busy, your player may stop in the middle of playback and give you
a "net congestion" message, then you will need to wait
for the file to re-load or to buffer more of the file before it
continues. Streaming audio may also slow down your web surfing while
the file plays. Also, if you want to replay the clip, you must re-stream
the entire audio file. You cannot fast-forward or rewind the audio
file without waiting for it to buffer; neither can you play it offline.
Downloading will save the entire audio file to your
hard drive or other directory that you choose. (Right-click on the
"speaker" icon, select "Save Target As" to begin
the download).
The advantage is that, once you have saved the audio file
to your hard drive and know exactly where it is, you can play the
file whether you are on the Internet or not, rewind, fast-forward,
burn to CD, upload onto your iPod, etc. You will not need to wait
for buffering; it should not affect your web surfing, and will not
stop in the middle of playback due to Internet traffic.
The disadvantage is that you will need to wait until the
entire audio file is downloaded to your hard drive or directory
(download time will vary, depending upon your Internet connection's
speed). If your player is not configured to play downloaded files
automatically upon completion, you may need to open your player
to locate the downloaded audio file and play it manually.
